Unprecedented shift in the diagnostic technology landscape in LATAM before and after COVID19

Market research report: Infectious Disease Diagnostics Market in the Latin American and the Caribbean Region

November 29th, 2020

At SupportA, we have gathered key information on the infectious diseases diagnostics market in Latin America (henceforth the LATAM region, namely the Americas excluding the USA and Canada) as of 2019 and 2020. Our market report comprises an array of diseases (among others COVID19, HIV, influenza, tuberculosis, hepatitis, vector-borne diseases, zoonotic, healthcare associated infections – HAI). For each of these diseases we have identified: key marketed diagnostic technologies (among others immunodiagnostics, PCR, sequencing) and their end users (clinical laboratories, hospitals, reference lab, research). Furthermore we have gathered this information by country and for the LATAM region as a whole.

Market Research

We have gathered the information through several surveys from the demand and supply side, crosschecking different sources such as published information in international and local epidemiological reports, journals, further triangulated via interviews with KOLs, researchers, healthcare providers, and public health decision-makers. We further analyzed the data to estimate market sizes.

Our team of consultants has a deep scientific background, as well as a deep understanding of the regional scientific environment and the life sciences markets. Our systematic approach, coupled with our deep understanding of the local markets, allows us to ensure a comprehensive and highly plausible current scenarios and figures.

Our research on the infectious diseases diagnostics market, by disease type, reveals an overwhelming shift in the diagnostic landscape before and after COVID19, as shown in Fig. 1. With the diagnostics of COVID19 representing almost 70% of the current market.

We have identified that diagnostic is mainly supported by national reference laboratories as end users, given that most of local facilities lack capabilities for laboratory diagnosis. The historical pattern for diagnostics in the region entails sending off specimens away from the point-of-care (PoC) (i.e. at the time and place of patient care) to the laboratory and then waiting hours or days to learn the results, during which time care must continue without the desired information. Therefore, one of the major opportunities for new diagnostic technologies is the desire to have them available and functioning in rural and small urban facilities for PoC solutions, i.e. medical diagnostic testing at or near the point of care.

One of the major opportunities for new diagnostic technologies is the desire to have them available and functioning in rural and small urban facilities for PoC solutions.

Given the tremendous impact on medical services and the large demand for diagnostic testing of COVID19, well equipped and prepared academic research settings such as molecular biology laboratories at universities and medical schools have taken the burden of COVID19 diagnostic. This is the reality in many LATAM countries. In collaboration with established diagnostic laboratories, academic facilities have acquired expertise in detecting virus from suspected COVID19 patients, virus handling, molecular work, and data analysis. In addition, in some countries of the region these research centers are also specialized in providing services for performance evaluation studies of new diagnostic technologies.

According to WHO, a positive rate of less than 5% is an indicator that the pandemic is under control in a country (Public health criteria to adjust public health and social measures in the context of COVID-19). We found that the positivity rate in some LAC countries is 100% (e.g. Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia), indicating the issues these countries are facing to meet the needs for surveillance of the pandemic.

We also noticed that differential diagnosis is still one of the major current challenges due to co-circulation of several infectious diseases that display similar clinical manifestations. This is the case of many vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, Chagas disease, and others. Therefore, there is a need of both multiplex platforms and tests capable of correctly identifying pathogens despite cross-reactivity.

Upon request we can provide customized market size reports, including a complete overview of the diagnostics technologies used by country or sub-region. We can provide market information and insights on epidemiological data, leading manufacturers, brands, product names, prices, ranking of distributors, challenges and opportunities for accessing the region with new diagnostic platforms.
